Medium Risk

Intervention based on evidence based patient education, manual therapy and exercise.

Patients with Medium Risk of developing persistent and incapacitating pain benefit from specialized Physiotherapy treatment and are informed taking account the scientific evidence knowledge. Regarding the characteristics of the patient and stage of the condition, the objectives of this intervention are centered in pain modulation, minimize disability, restore normal life (including work) and promote self-management of the condition. For this group, are recommended up to 6 individual sessions of Physiotherapy, which may include a multimodal intervention incorporating the principles of self-management, manual therapy and clinical exercise. The key aspects of the intervention are:

1)

Assessment should focus on biomedical, psychological and social aspects.

2)

Assessment should question the patient's concerns and expectation.

3)

The assessment should include a subjective and physical examination in order to identify the specific characteristics of the condition of the patient.

4)

Treatment should be adjusted to the specific patient needs/ concerns.

5)

If the objective evaluation results in clear and specific changes related to the complaints of the patient (e.g. symptoms associated with movements and / or postures, symptoms associated with tests of joint mobility, etc), therefore an similar specific intervention is proposed based on manual therapy and clinical exercise.

6)

If there is no strong relationship between the results of the physical assessment and the complaints of the patient, the intervention should be more generic (based on general clinical practice) and focused on the general improvement of functional activities.

7)

It is also recommended that objectives of the intervention should be specific and temporally defined. It is expected that intervention plan results on functional gains and disability reduction.
